Constructed between 1909 and 1912, Tāmaki Makaurau’s Chief Post Office is one of New Zealand’s most significant heritage buildings. The refurbishment adapts the Category 1 landmark for contemporary workplace use while revealing the enduring qualities of its original architecture.

A heritage-led approach guided the work, retaining and repairing significant fabric, removing past interventions, and allowing contemporary insertions to remain clearly distinguishable yet sympathetic. At Te Komititanga, new bronzed steel archways reinterpret the original open arches, strengthening the building’s civic presence and reconnecting it with its historic entrance.

Inside, faience tiles, mosaic floors, cornices, keystones, columns, kauri flooring and steel-framed windows have been carefully conserved. Seismic strengthening and building services are concealed within existing walls, floors and discreet service zones, preserving the clarity of the historic spaces. New terrazzo, oak joinery and finely detailed balustrades provide a contemporary counterpoint without competing with the original fabric.
